Plans under way to replace Whitburn's Leisure Centre
19 June, 2012Plans to replace the Whitburn Leisure Centre, which was destroyed by fire last year, have taken another step forward this week with West Lothian Leisure working alongside West Lothian Council to re-build the leisure facility.
A building warrant was granted by West Lothian Council last week, and the first parts of the steel frame were then erected on 1st June and work continues today. The shelter next to the library has been refurbished inside and once furniture has been delivered West Lothian Leisure staff will be based there. This office will soon have plans of the building which the community can view. The office will also be used (nearer to opening) to promote activities.
Robin Strang, Chief Executive of Xcite @ West Lothian Leisure said: "We’re delighted that work on replacing Xcite Whitburn is progressing on schedule, as we know the facility has been sorely missed by the local community.
"Although we are re-instating the building on a 'like-for-like' basis, we have been able to introduce additional features such as a deck level pool, improved soft play area and views from the reception foyer through to the pool.
"We received a lot of useful feedback from the community during our consultation on the plans which was fed back to the design team who have, where possible, included the suggestions, such as introducing a buggy park next to the soft play area.
"I am confident the local community will be delighted with the new Leisure Centre and look forward to the day when we can re-open the doors."
"Our insurers have agreed that the re-instated pool will be deck level and include steps into the pool, which is similar to the steps at the new Bathgate pool, for users with mobility issues. We remain on schedule for completion in the spring of 2013."
